OUGD406 (Studio Brief 3) Designer research

I have decided to look further into minimalist graphic design, before I start to develop ideas for my own alternative movie poster. Moderninst designers such as Neville Brody and Mike Joyce are good examples to use as their clean cut and minimal designs are effective yet simple.
Modernist graphic design is the cutting edge, new and original style of design. This is the attempt to find new and hidden meanings in the human experience and is communicated to the audience in a clean, straight forward, compositional format.

Modernism is a term used in the aftermath of the 1st world war and the Russian Revolution in a period where the artistic avant-grade dreamed of a new world free from conflict, greed and social inequality. The term modernism was used in graphic design itself since around 1925-1930, as once economic conditions improved designer had to reassess their work, adapting it to a mass market and sometimes  even to the demands of fascism. Initially before this time modernism was was only largely experimental but then moved from the sketch board to the real world. Modernism has survived for all this time and still remains a powerful force of the design world of today. (Designing a new world V&A: 1

Mike Joyce:

These minimalist posters are inspiring, I would like to turn my designs intro something very simple but still making a statement. Because the brief requires to screen print with only two colours plus stock, this limits the design choices as the poster can not be too detailed as there are only three colours available for use. This will make designing a minimalist poster easier.

I started to research further into existing alternative movie posters, Olly Moss recreates a lot of movie posters.

I also looked at the work of Reynold Brown, his work is a very different style to Moss' as Browns alternative movie posters are not minimal.

After analysing both of these styles, I think I would like to pursue my own ideas and development along the minimal route. I think that minimalist design sometimes works better, and especially for an alternative movie poster, I think this will be the best style to chose.

I started to research existing alternative movie posters, most of the designs I have noticed are very minimal and simple, but they work well and most are more effective than the original movie poster.

OUGD406 (Studio brief 3) Armageddon research

Firstly I started to brainstorm Armageddon. The first things that came to my head were things to do with the solar system, and all planets but earth, as armageddon suggests the end of everything. Armageddon in the bible is seen as a scene of a final battle between the forces of good and evil.

Armageddon is a 1998 American science fiction disaster drama film, directed by Michael Bay, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and released by Touchstone Pictures. The film follows a group ofblue-collar deep-core drillers sent by NASA to stop a gigantic asteroid on a collision course with Earth. It features an ensemble cast including Bruce WillisBen AffleckBilly Bob ThorntonLiv TylerOwen WilsonWill PattonPeter StormareWilliam FichtnerMichael Clarke DuncanKeith David and Steve Buscemi.

I watched this film and it was about a group of oil rig workers that are requested to stop an asteroid from hitting earth in order to save the planet. There is a prominent theme of love and connection within this film and also bonds that can not be broken.
When watching the film I noted down some key words:
meteor shower
global killer
telescope
end of all things
nasa
space
shuttle

Existing Armageddon movie poster:
The existing armageddon movie poster consists of a typical explosive background and photograph of main characters,. I don't think this is a very effective movie poster as it has the expected elements that a space movie poster would include. The type is not a good choice for the theme of this film, I think a sans serif font should have been chosen instead.
