What is music?
'Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch (which governs melody and harmony) rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter and articulation), dynamics and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.'
'Performance is the physical expression of music. Often, a musical work is performed once its structure and instrumentation are satisfactory to its creators; however, as it gets performed, it can evolve and change. A performance can either be rehearsed or improvised. Improvisation is a musical idea created without premeditation, while rehearsal is vigorous repetition of an idea until it has achieved cohesion. Musicians will sometimes add improvisation to a well-rehearsed idea to create a unique performance.'
I started brainstorming initial ideas, this spider diagram below shows my initial thought processes.
I started to think about the different genres of music, the types of venues specific music is played, how different people are inspired by different genres etc. The idea of focusing on the different ages of music seems like an interesting topic to investigate, I also like the idea of researching into the CD covers that are associated with different genres, there is many different styles of album artwork within the music industry and it would be interesting to research further in that direction.
This diagram shows a quick brainstorm of ideas using the subject album artwork/CD covers. I have considered looking at magazines, advertisements, branding, events. I could also look into whether certain CD covers are iconic, and recognisable. These are only initial thoughts as to which direction I could take my subject matter in. I could also look into the different genres of music, and what different fashions, and styles are associated with each music category.
With the different genres in mind, I started to think about how different genres have different effects, how they influence different fashion and styles, and the styles the genres of music come with seem to have a present theme throughout. Genres of music can be seen to categorise people, resulting in stereotypical styles within the music industry.
To further my research I could look at the ages of music, and the transitions and changes. Also music is a very significant part of peoples lives, I could look into how different types of music make them individual.
Initial Proposal:
We were asked before the crit to summarise our initial ideas, and come up with what we will be researching, how we will research it and also why.
What:
Different genres of music?
Different styles?
What are they associate with?
Why:
I would like to research further into different styles and how they are represented, also look at how they are represented, and how different genres are portrayed through the artwork that is show.
How:
Research genres and styles. I could look at magazine advertisements, CD covers, album artwork, and also look at designers work focusing on type and image.
I could also photograph and document any events.
