OUGD403 (Studio Brief 3) Development

To develop this typeface to present in the interim crit, I will continue this idea of accentuating certain stems on letterforms, and creating angular serifs but in more detail and accuracy.

This shows my interpretation of helvetica taking Wills characteristics into consideration. I have extended the ascenders that are present within his name, and I have made each letterform slightly narrower.

Interim Crit
Overall, the feedback gained from the crit was very useful. The most significant points raised in the crit were that my initial typeface manipulation didn't relate to the original typeface clearly enough. I got some positive feedback, which consisted of:

  • The simplicity speaks volume about concept
  • The triangular serifs presents the alternative modernist approach well
Some helpful improvements suggested were, adding serifs to other letters, make the serifs more prominent to emphasise the modernist approach and that the way I have altered the apex's on certain letters work well so I should continue to work with this idea. The group also thought the way I had referred to other modernist artists work to influence my ideas was a good starting point.

After Crit Decisions
After the crit, I have taken into consideration what my peers suggested and I have tried to develop my typeface and make the improvements listed above.
To improve my final typeface, I will introduce more serifs on letters that don't necessarily always have serifs, I will also try and make my manipulated typeface resemble the original (helvetica) slightly more, however I still want to keep the letterforms slightly narrower to make the font light instead of regular.
